Fair Employment Practices

In Singapore, the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices (TGFEP), formulated by the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP) aims to set fair employment practices that employers should adopt to prevent workplace discrimination.

All firms and companies must adhere to the guidelines on Fair Employment Practices and have fair employment practices that are open, merit-based and non-discriminatory. The Fair Consideration Framework (FCF) sets out fair hiring requirements for firms and companies in Singapore to ensure fair job opportunities for job seekers.

What are Fair Employment Practices?

There are a number of items in the list below that spells out Fair Employment Practices in the eyes of the Tripartite Alliance:

  1. Recruit employments based on merit e.g. certification, education that met the requirements, fitness for the job etc. Family responsibilities, marital status, race and religion are NOT merit based and employers must be mindful when recruiting.

  2. Treating employees fairly with respect and implement progressive human resource management systems. An example can be a HR framework that allows for fair career progression of employee.

  3. Provide employees with fair and equal opportunities when considering for training, career advancement and development.

  4. Reward fairly based on performance, merit and contribution.

  5. Abide by labour laws and adopt TGFEP.
